Traits of a good medical biller
The Medical Billing industry, among other industries, has seen a surge in outsourcing of employee-centric processes. This need has risen through the shortage of qualified employees in most markets. Companies are looking for other alternatives to stay competitive, and in some cases, just to stay in business. Excluding direct costs such as salary and benefits, the cost of training & development and retention are proving to be prohibitive; as much as 20% of direct costs if an employee stays for a period of one year and much higher if a trainee quits within the first year of employment. A company can create a good employee but stars are made in heaven!! It does take certain qualities to be a great Medical Biller and a good recruitment plan should be capable of identifying them. |

Outsourcing Offshore: Is Coding Next?
Health information management (HIM) is not the first field to be impacted by the trend to outsource services offshore. Opinions about it vary, the lightest of which comes from humorist Dave Barry. In his recent column for the Miami Herald, he quipped: "When you order a hamburger at McDonald's, the person who's taking your order is actually located in the Philippines. Your hamburger is physically cooked by workers in China, and then transmitted almost instantaneously to the United States via a high-speed Digitized Beef Patty Line (DBPL). All of this happens in less time than it takes you to pick your nose." But coding isn't hamburger, and offshore outsourcing is a serious issue to many. Is medical coding next and, if so, how will this impact the industry? Vision Healthsource, a Perot Systems Company based in Chennai, India, was more than willing to speak about their outsourcing services. "We started operations back in 1998. Initially what we offered was the data entry piece of the work the charge entry, the payment postings, that kind of support work. But two years ago, we started offering coding services to our clients." Today, Vision Healthsource supports some 35 U.S.-based clients and currently offers coding services to six of them, according to Shaji Ravi, head of account management and production. |
